PITTSBORO - The Chatham County Board of Education says the 94 acres it owns in northeast Chatham may not be suitable for a new high school.

The site lacks water and sewer service, traffic in the area is already congested, and the environmental impact on the surrounding wetlands may be too great, the board says.

The school board presented its case to the county Board of Commissioners on Monday night during their first joint meeting of the year. The commissioners told the school board its plans need to be set in the next six to seven months because the fast-growing county needs the new school.

PITTSBORO — Two boards got together Monday night to talk about issues facing Chatham County.

The Chatham County Board of Education and the Board of Commissioners met jointly to discuss, specifically, a potentially problematic high school site and to talk about improving communication between the two boards in planning for the county’s future.

“We’re really trying to share information so we can become a more information-based system and work hand in hand,” said Board of Education Chairman Norman Clark.

December 18th Re-Districting Committee Meeting

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006
The redistricting committee for the Siler City and Silk Hope areas met on Monday, December 18, at 4:00 p.m. at Siler City Elementary School. The committee had planned its next meeting for January 4, but the OR/Ed. Lab requested an additional meeting for map suggestion clarification. The suggestions were made during the December 13 meeting.

During the December 18th meeting Mike Miller, Program Manager with the OR/Ed. Lab, worked with the committee to clarify and adapt the optimal elementary scenarios for the 2007-08 Siler City area re-districting.

Miller will now take the suggestions and create updated maps from them. The maps will be available at Siler City Elementary School, Silk Hope School, the central office, and on the district website as soon as they are completed. The goal of the school system is to have the maps accessible for families to view over the holiday and give feedback before the next redistricting committee and Board of Education meetings. The district website contains an email link for making redistricting comments and suggestions.

The redistricting committee meeting scheduled for Thursday, January 4, remains on the calendar. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. and be held at Siler City Elementary School.

The Chatham County Board of Education will have redistricting on its January 8 work session agenda.
